Pusser’s Rum 40º

Also known as “Pusser’s Red Label”. Proprietary dark brown British Virgin Islands rum blend available in 150-proof, 109-proof (black label), 84-proof (blue label) and 80-proof (red label) versions. Pusser’s is ostensibly similar to the rums dispensed onboard Royal Navy ships, at least from the postwar years until the abandonment of the rum ration in 1970. Navy rum originally refers to rum distilled in the British colonies (notably Jamaica, Guyana, and Barbados) of the West Indies and purchased in large quantities by the Royal Navy for rationing to its sailors. Much of this rum was aged in Great Britain and vatted for distribution. Aging Caribbean rums in the radically different climate of England yielded uniquely-flavored rums, and the term “London dock rum” was coined to label them. Today, the Royal Navy is long out of the rum business, but several brands, notably Lamb’s Navy Rum, attempt to maintain the tradition. Often bottled with a relatively high proof.
