Cruz Tawny

Also known as “Porto Cruz Tawny”. Tawny port is generic for rich fortified wine produced in Portugal and aged at least two years in barrels. The oxidation they experience during this wood aging gradually turns the wine brownish and the wood contributes tannins not found in ruby port. Most Tawny port is either young and bottled without an age statement—this port is inexpensive and well suited to mixology. Older tawny ports are often labeled with an age statement (e.g., “Aged 10 Years”) and are usually best appreciated on their own. If the wine in question wasn’t made in Portugal, it isn’t really Port, but a wine made in the style of port. Some countries (including the United States) permit these wines to be labeled as “port”.
