Basil is an assortment of mint-related medicinal herbs: sweet basil, Thai basil, holy basil and lemon basil. Sweet basil is common in Italian cuisine, the others in Asian cuisine. Basil is uncommon in mixed drinks, but it can be used in much the same ways as mint, to radically different effect. In unqualified use, “basil” can be assumed to refer to the sweet basil common to Italian cuisine.
