oude genever
Also known as “old genever”. Oude genever is generic for the “old style” of dutch genever containing at least 15% malt wine in the blend, no more than 20 grams of sugar per liter and bottled at 35% ABV or more. Note that “oude” or “old” in this case does not necessarily imply significant barrel aging. Oude genever may be bottled unaged or aged at least one year in barrels of less than 700 liters. Some aged genever is aged a significant period of time (and is more likely to carry an age statement). Moreover, oude genever is merely as old as the mid-19th Century, representing the style that emerged with the proliferation of the Coffey still and neutral spirits.
