black rum

40% ABV

“Black rum” is generic for a dark rum with a relatively large amount of caramel coloring, rendering the liquor dark brown and relatively opaque. Implied is that the other qualities of the rum are secondary to its color, so the matter is up to your discretion. This approximate style of rum exemplifies how color has no reliable relationship to aging, although most black rums are aged less than brown rums (and this fact is often reflected in a lower price). These black rums are almost always molasses-based.
